Many dolphins give birth while they are in the ocean. Some that are in aquariums will get pregnant and deliver the calf in the waters of the aquarium as they are in a safe environment.
Katrl is 28 and delivered her calf at the Chicago Shedd Aquarium. She was only in labor for about 3 hours before the baby was born. The birth was captured on video by one of the staff members who helps with the dolphin in the water.
In the video, one can see the moment that the tail of the calf emerges as well as the time when the baby is able to take his first breath while outside of the mother. The natural instincts of the dolphin take effect as soon as he is in the water. He starts to kick his tail so that he can get to the surface of the water in order to get that first breath of air.
There is no name for the baby dolphin yet. He weighed in at 25 pounds and was right at 3 feet in length. This was the first baby for the mother, and she handled the birth and caring for the newborn like a professional as her instincts went into place as well. Once the calf was born, the mother made sure he stayed away from the sides of the aquarium so that he was protected.
