These days, one of the most complicated and contentious social issues is gay marriage. While many people are opposed to gay marriage on religious grounds, others argue that the government and the individuals who influence its decision-making processes do not have the right to impose their spiritual views on other people.

In light of the fact that gay marriage remains a hot topic in contemporary culture, it’s interesting to note a recent development in which one lesbian couple, after spending 72 years together, finally married. The couple, Vivian Boyack and Alice “Nonie” Dubes, made their mutual commitment official at First Christian Church.

The union was rendered legally official by reverend Linda Hunsaker. In commenting on the celebratory union, Hunsaker stated the event should have transpired a long time ago. In making the comment, Hunsaker was not referring to Boyack and Dubes failure to make it down the aisle sooner. Rather, the reverend was referring to laws which still preclude gay couples from getting married. At this historical moment, only 19 states permit homosexual couples to enjoy the legal and sociocultural benefits that result from marriage.

What makes the union of Boyack and Dubes even more special is the glowing statements that other people in the community have to say about them. One wedding guest, Jerry Deast, has known the couple for 55 years. Deast reported that they are special. Dubes herself stated that she and her wife have had a wonderful time throughout the years.
