George Zimmerman is making headlines again as he was arrested for domestic violence on Monday. He was taken into custody and charged for assault and battery against his pregnant girlfriend.
You may remember Zimmerman for murdering an unarmed teen, Trayvon Martin, last year. He says he acted in self defense, following the Stand Your Ground statute in Florida.
After he was acquitted for the shooting, the former neighborhood watchman started facing accusations of domestic violence toward his wife, Shellie Zimmerman. Shellie says he threatened her and her father’s lives, but they didn’t file charges. Shellie filed for divorce in September and papers were served to him in jail on Monday. Zimmerman has been pulled over twice for speeding recently as well.
But now he’s back in jail for aggravated assault, battery and criminal mischief for beating his girlfriend, and allegedly pointing a shotgun at her. The fact that she’s pregnant, makes his domestic violence charge an automatic felony. He told police that his girlfriend “had gone crazy on me. She just started smashing stuff, taking stuff that belonged to me.” Zimmerman’s bail is set at $9,000.
