Washington, D.C. – The GOP has thus far successfully thwarted the Senate Democrats latest effort to gain a political issue that might build traction with voters ahead of what is expected to be a landslide defeat of Democrats nationwide. The Democrats have already conceded that the GOP will retain control of the House and there is legitimate concern that the GOP will take over the Senate as well.
The recent decision by the Supreme Court that private corporation Hobby Lobby does not have to pay for contraceptives if it violates their religious beliefs is meaningless to Senator Elizabeth Warren. Her accusation that the GOP is fighting the issue as if it were 1914 as opposed to 2014 is tantamount to saying that exercising religious beliefs is something of a bygone era.
Warren is the Democrats new rising star. She is able to articulate an unapologetic liberal message. Rather than run on a center-right message as most liberals do in order to get elected in Red states, she is campaigning for fellow Democrats in those states with openly liberal policies. The Democrat attempt to override the Supreme Court decision failed to break the GOP filibuster 56-33.
The measure is largely symbolic as it stands no chance of gaining passage in the GOP House, but that’s not the purpose of the bill. Senator Warren made it clear that the measure is supposed to underscore what Democrats call the Republicans war on women. As such, her comments are political “red meat” for the party base to rally behind.
